Anti Virus
These days ALWAYS make sure that you have a good level of virus and firewall protection.
There are many to choose from some free, some not.
A common one is AVG Free for antivirus and Zone Alarm for a free firewall
McAfee or Norton are common examples of "paid for" software.

Back Up
If you have any valuable documents or pictures always make sure you keep a back up, either on a USB stick or burn to a CD. Many people have only realised the importance of the AFTER they have lost a valuable piece of information

Safe Surfing
If you have a young family, keep the PC in a common room for more visibility and safe surfing.

Maintenance
Every two months or so, do a defrag of your hard drive. This keep it all nice and tidy and the computer has an easier time finding all the bits of information.

E-Mail
If you don't know the sender of an e-Mail DON'T open it - delete it particularly if there is an attachment. Be particularity on the look out for scams or false mail from say your bank, they will NEVER send you anything that requires you to enter a password or any other sensitive information.
Power Saving
Turn your system on to standby when not using it - apart from saving electricity it will help protect the life of your screen.

Quick navigation
Get to know the keyboard shortcuts - the keyboard can be faster than the mouse.

Downloading
Create a folder on your desktop called "downloads" and save everything you might download from the web to the there. It makes it easier to find them and back them up later

On line purchasing
Remember to look for the padlock at the bottom of the screen and the https:// in the address bar before you make any purchase on the web. If both are not present do not purchase.

Taskbar
Put your most useful shortcuts on the taskbar - save time and hassle

File recovery
Remember if you have deleted a file by mistake it is still in your recycle bin so don't panic it can be restored (provided you have not emptied the bin)

Spyware
Get some anti spy ware - "Search and destroy" is a good example of a free one

Operating System
Keep your operating system updated - this is usually automatic and the system will usually look after this for you.
